Review

This is a science fiction slave narrative in which a young black girl travels back and forth between her 1970's life in California and 1830''s plantation life in Virginia

The angst of the protagonist having to wrestle with working to save the lives of her present and past family members (both black and white); of having to work through the internal struggle of being black and having her white husband understand her (both in the present and the past); and the great story line that is present throughout the novel

I believe that great fiction helps us understand the black experience through story, whether that be Maya Angelou, Toni Morrison, Alice Walker, Colton Whitehead, or Octavia Butler. Engaging with another person's life through literature helps me to develop empathy for those who are not like me.
